Professor Marc Cohen is an Australian pioneer of integrative and holistic medicine, having made significant impacts on education, research, clinical policy and practice. He is a registered medical practitioner with degrees in western medicine, physiology and psychology, and PhDs in Chinese medicine and biomedical engineering.
Prof Cohen became Australia’s first Professor of Complementary Medicine, heading the Department of Complementary Medicine at RMIT University in 2002, and now leads the RMIT’s ‘Wellness Discipline’ in the School of Health Sciences, alongside his role as Program Leader for their online Master of Wellness Program.
He is the current President of the Australasian Wellness Association, a Board Member of the Global Wellness Summit, a seven-year serving past-President of the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association (AIMA), a member of the RACGP-AIMA Joint Working party, and also sits on the Editorial Board for five international journals.
He has previously held positions as Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Medical and Health Sciences Education at Monash University, Expert Advisor to the TGA Complementary Medicine Evaluation Committee, Member of the NHMRC Grant Review panel on Primary Healthcare, Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the National Institute of Complementary Medicine and multiple ministerial appointments on various Registration and Accreditation Panels. He previously held the position as Director of the Centre for Complementary Medicine at the Monash Institute for Health Services Research.
As a medical practitioner and researcher Prof Cohen has pioneered the introduction of complementary, holistic and integrative medicine into mainstream settings. He is actively engaged with industry and performs expert consultancy services to a range of industry sectors. His impact in the field is recognised by the media, he has received four consecutive RMIT Media Star Awards, and also the inaugural ‘leadership and collaboration’ award from the National Institute of Complementary Medicine.
Prof Cohen is a highly respected author and editor with an extensive list of accomplishments, including having had over 80 peer–reviewed articles published, and co-authoring the landmark text “Herbs and Natural Supplements an Evidenced Based Guide”. He writes a monthly column for Prevention Magazine, regularly examines PhD thesis from local and international universities, and peer-reviews articles for many international scientific journals.
Prof Cohen is one of the most active people in Australia when it comes to organising conferences on the subject of holistic and integrative medicine, and has organised over 10 Holistic Health Conferences Internationally. Prof Cohen is also a sought after presenter and has invited to speak at over 40 international and 40 national conferences.
